What AFJROTC Parents Need to Know About the College Application Process

1.  Preparation for college begins no later than the first day of a student's freshman year of high school (9th grade).  Colleges typically look at all available high school transcripts in making acceptance decisions.  Also, class ranking for high school students is based on all high school coursework.  The AFJROTC program helps cadets understand the importance of making good grades every report card, as well as teaching study skills that can help cadets stay on top of coursework in all their classes.

2.  Students should plan on taking the SAT and ACT no later than the spring semester of their junior year of high school (11th grade).  These tests are just too important to put off until senior year (12th grade).  Most colleges begin accepting applications on May 1 of the high school student's junior year.  Having those SAT and/or ACT scores in hand during the summer before senior year gives an incredible advantage to those students who have taken the tests.

3.  Applying to colleges and applying for financial aid is a lot of work--but it's well worth the effort.  Your student will feel an incredible sense of accomplishment, knowing all the hard work it took to get to that college of his or her dreams!
